Kai Lu lectured as he grabbed the soldier by his outstretched forearm, before sliding his left foot forward. Swinging his left arm around and hooking it around the back of the older male's neck, then, he twisted his body, throwing him off his feet and down onto the ground on his back. And if the man had not been a soldier of Zhi Ming as well, the impact would have been harder, but Kai Lu made sure that it was enough to teach him. Kai Lu would stare down at him, and wait until he had recovered from the impact, before helping him back up on his feet. As soon as he had, he patted the man on his back, letting out a soft laugh. "There, there. Walk it off. You'll be fine." He turned his head then towards the batch of new recruits.
"And that is how you do the waist take-down. It's most effective against enemies charging at you with a thrust, like with a knife. Make sure that you get away from the route of the weapon, and that you can reach his wrist. The rest is all using his momentum against him, as I just demonstrated." He explained, and he failed to realize, of course, that such words would be useless in their education. Theory was as it was, theory. Fighting, however, was a test of physical prowess. They would only learn through training and practice. Kai Lu raised both of his hands, then, clapping them together twice.
"Come on now, get up! Pick a partner and start practicing. I will be correcting you guys as you go." The soldiers would all quickly get up on their feet and spread across the training hall. Kai Lu placed both hands on his hips, then, revealing a proud smile as he gazed upon the place he was in. It was an open hall, with no walls whatsoever save for the pillars that held the roof up. The floor was made of tiled plywood, sturdy and smooth. The roof was pointed up, and carried enough height to make the place feel more spacey.
This was one of the many training halls in the barracks, but this one had unofficially become Kai Lu's office. This was where he trained and taught, and this was where people often came to when they were looking for the golden fighter. He was clad in a simple training attire. A pair of black pants, and a golden vest, held open to reveal his chest, that carried the symbol of his family on its back. He was barefooted, with naught but bandages wrapped around the middle of his feet and his ankles. His forearms-down was bandaged as well.
He would pace down the training hall, approaching recruits that were failing to execute the technique properly, and teaching them first-hand.

It had hit suddenly, they had been on the way back from another part of the castle when the sky began to spit all over them. She honestly did not mind the rain, however, she had the Princesses dignity to keep in tact. Rather than rush her to the castle, as would have been what a normal attendant would have done, Sumire grabbed the girls wrist and took off at a slight sprint across the lawn to a traning hall. They could wait out the rain there. It was the best plan she had, lest she allow the Princess to get soaked, her clothing and hair ruined, and possibly catch cold.
It was not until she opened the door and shut it that she realized that this particular training hall was not currently empty. She held back a curse as her purple gaze swept over the males before her. Her hand raising quickly to the Princesses eyes to cover them. Her voice flowed out smoothly, commanding even. "As much as I hate to disrupt your training, it is raining a bit too hard for the Princess to make it back to the castle. If you gentlemen do not mind, may we wait out the storm here?" Her hand remained over the Princesses eyes.
This was obviously her attempt to save the girls dignity and innocence. She could not allow her to see a bare mans chest, that was just...unacceptable. Also, the polite side of her was obviously just because the Princess was here. She would rather have just ran back to the castle otherwise. |

It wasn’t a strange phenomenon for the weather to rapidly change in Yumiris. Xihe, of course, was no exception to this law of nature. One moment Nao was enjoying her walk with Sumire, discussing about how nice it would be if they could go out shopping in town in such a sunny day, and the next heavy rain drizzled and poured almost too quickly for the girls to count the minutes. Nao thought it would be fun to stay in the rain once in a while, but clearly Sumire was against the idea. As soon as the rain came down, Sumire grabbed her wrist and dragged her off to someplace where she thought she could get Nao a roof to seek a shelter under.
Sumire hurrily opened a door to one of the training halls in the palace’s barracks, and as Nao came in second, it became her obligation to close the door off. She was about to call Sumire when she turned her head around and away from the door, only to find that her vision had been blocked by what she assumed would be her attendant’s hand. Confusion stirred in her mind as she followed Sumire’s speech intently. As clueless as she was, she at least caught that the training hall was already occupied by the palace’s soldiers. Training.
As a follow-up to Sumire’s saying, Nao felt that she had to greet them if they were to take up the soldiers’ precious training time. “Good day, men. I humbly apologize for the disturbance, but I would be much in your debt if you are to offer us shelter.” Anything else was already mentioned by her capable friend Sumire, and she found no need to say more than what was needed. But she still didn’t get why Sumire had to cover her eyes.

Kai Lu found himself being cut short as he directed a soldier's arm towards the back of his sparring partner's neck. And just as he went silent, so did most of the soldiers around him. Why did he suddenly freeze? Well, his sharp trained ears caught hint of the doors sliding open. See, he was aware that some of his training regimes was tough, and many soldiers often tried to sneak out of the hall. As a result, Kai Lu had trained himself in picking out the soft sound of the door sliding across its hinges. Was someone trying to sneak out? In an introductory lesson? No, no. He was not going to have any of that. He let go of the soldier's arm, partially stomping over towards the door. The recruits were smart enough to get out of his way. "Where do you thi--"
It seemed that this day was a day of short sentences, for it was then that Kai Lu finally realized who it was at the door. "As much as I hate to disrupt your training, it is raining a bit too hard for the Princess to make it back to the castle. If you gentlemen do not mind, may we wait out the storm here?"
It was Lady Sumire, the Princess' attendant. And the Princess herself. She was here? His eyes widened, the man immediately throwing his shins behind him. He fell upon his knees, the rest of his body following the momentum as he fell forward. He pressed his forehead against the floor, his palms flat on the ground beside it, as he bowed in respect to a member of the Imperial Family. And following his lead, the rest of the soldiers would follow.
“Good day, men. I humbly apologize for the disturbance, but I would be much in your debt if you are to offer us shelter.”
"Good afternoon, Princess Nao-Yeon and Lady Sumire. Do not worry, you are always free to enter the training hall at any time. If it is to your wishes, I can clear the hall so as to not disturb you and the Princess, Lady." He replied sharply, obviously not caring much about his lesson plan more than the welfare of the very family he served and fought for. He could always have the training session another day. These men couldn't complain. They were soldiers. They would have to be there when they were called upon, be it for duty or training.

Had she been anyone else, she probably would have found this situation to be extremely amusing. However, most did not believe that Sumire had a funny bone in her body. She did of course, but this was a bad situation to be in. Half naked men, that was not what a Princess needed to be caught seeing.
As the man spoke though, she met his gaze, her own narrowed. She knew what the Princess would say, she would not want to disrupt their training. It was important. She also figured that the men were hoping she would disrupt their training. She had caught the looks of some of them when she came in. Sumire was nothing if not observant. She took a deep breath and released it. "How about you just put on shirts those that are not wearing any and continue your practice? The Princess would not want to be the reason that these fine men did not get their proper training."
The last sentence had a hint of sadistic sound to it. She flashed an innocent smile towards the group of men. Why should they get out easy? They may very well wind up protecting her Princess one day, so they should have to work every little bit for their positions. Sumire was definitely a bit of a bitch when it came down to responsibilities.
She then turned towards the Princess, her own hand remaining against her eyes. "You will need to tell them to rise so they may get clothed and I may have my hand back." She whispered to the girl, affection tinging her words. |

…That. Voice.
Of course. Of course Nao knew just who that soldier who just spoke to them was. She didn’t even need her vision to confirm her deduction because she was that sure. She felt blood rushing up to her head, and slowly, a rosy scarlet color spread over her cheeks, then her whole face. Sumire, who had her hand covering Nao’s eyes, could probably feel the temperature of Nao’s body rising.
Her pulse beat in her neck and her temples and her fingertips. Her heart was thumping so loud, she could have sworn someone was playing Wadaiko right next to her. For a moment all she could hear was her own heart beats, and it took her a while to register Sumire’s whisper into her mind stream. ”Oh… Oh yeah,” she finally replied Sumire. ”Thank you… for the consideration, but yes, I… I mean we… Would find it unbearable if we are to trouble you.” Nao, stop stuttering. She quickly attempted to gain composure before doing what she was supposed to do. ”In any case, you may rise now, soldiers.”
…Whatever would she do if Sumire was to release her hand that was covering her eyes later? She was not expecting this to happen. Out of all the training halls in the area, it had to be the one Kai Lu was occupying. Well, of course she would be happy to see him, but then she knew she would be too happy to carry herself as per normal, and she didn’t want to falter in front of him. It usually took her some time to run simulations in her mind before she made herself ‘accidentally’ bump into him when he was training or making his way somewhere – which was so obvious it could hardly be dubbed accidental by anyone who was not an airhead. Dilemmas. “Sumireeee…” she softly whined.

Kai Lu blinked, before raising his head lightly, his golden eyes placing the princess in his peripherals. Lady Sumire had given her instructions, and all that was needed was for the princess to acknowledge it before he followed it. Lady Sumire may carry influence over him, but the Princess was the highest official within this hall, and her word carried the heaviest weight among them. After a while, behind Sumire's veil of fingers, she spoke. ”Thank you… for the consideration, but yes, I… I mean we… Would find it unbearable if we are to trouble you. In any case, you may rise now, soldiers.” Kai Lu blinked, before bowing his head once again in acknowledgement to the order. "Yes, Princess." And with that, he pushed himself up onto both feet, before turning to his soldiers. Every single one of them straightened their bodies so that they were all kneeling.
"You heard the Princess. Those who are not properly dressed, move quickly to put a shirt on." The soldiers all responded with the respective 'Yes, sir!', before rushing off to cover themselves up. He turned back towards the Lady and the Princess once again, giving a bow of his head in respect, excusing himself, before proceeding to the other side of the training hall. He too had his torso revealed, after all. He would grab his bag, pulling out a black shirt with torn sleeves, before putting it upon his body. Of course, he would remove the earlier vest and place it beside his bag. Tucking the black shirt into his pants, he would turn towards the soldiers. Confirming that everyone was ready, he would issue his order.
"Carry on." And with that, the soldiers would continue on their training regime, though cleverly clearing an area for the two ladies within the hall to rest in without having to worry about being collided. Kai Lu would pass through the mess of bodies, approaching the Princess and the Lady, holding two foldable chairs in his hands. Giving a bow of his head once again, he set it at the edge of the hall, before offering the seats for them. "Please, Princess, Lady Sumire. Make yourselves comfortable."
And as soon as they were seated, he would take a few steps back. "Is there anything else I can provide, Princess?" they won't let me give in |

As soon as they were all properly clothed, her hand moved to her own face and wiped off some of the rain droplets. She watched the men before her for a moment as Kai Lu instructed them to carry on. Her gaze however went to the Princess as she gave voice to her inner thoughts. The tone was the biggest clue. Sumire blinked a moment before realization hit. This man before her. Gaze narrowed on him for a second. Leave it to Nao to like a fricken tree.
She sighed and muttered under her breath as the male walked towards them. "Just relax. Deep breaths and be yourself." Sumire had no experience in things of this kind of emotional nature. However, for Nao she would at least attempt to help.
As the male offered them seats, Sumire did not sit. It was not really a big surprise. She did however thank the male for both her seat and the Princesses. "You would not happen to have access to a towel or something that the Princess might dry herself with do you?" She had gotten wet after all. Sumire did not mind being wet, however, she did worry about the Princesses health. She threw the girl a worried glance, unsure of how she would handle this situation.
Her gaze floated back to the training though, watching intently. Her form stood perfectly straight by the Princess. It was not that she did not trust these people, it was more that Sumire was the type to always be alert for any sort of danger when her charge was near. Even in such a secure room. Not to mention, Sumire was interested in such things, not that she was allowed to openly practice them.
Even her own fan fighting stemmed mostly from her dancing and using speed. |

Whatever just happened didn’t really happen to Nao. To be more precise, it didn’t register to her mind because, well, she blanked out. She wanted to bang her head into walls or punch herself in the face so that she could calm down and clear her mind, but of course the situation she was in didn’t allow her to do so. She had an image to maintain, a responsibility to carry as a member of the Xihe royal family.
She followed Sumire’s advice but it didn’t work for her at all. Not when Kai Lu was approaching. ’Noooooooooooo. …Noooooo, noooooo.’ |
[/b] She was sure she blushed even more, so she immediate sat down as soon as the chairs were set, but her sight was now fixated on the man standing in front of them. He then asked if the girls require anything else that he could help provide, but heck, Nao momentarily lost understanding of the language, so she kept quiet. Luckily for her, the capable Sumire asked for a towel from him, and it seemed like he was also expecting Nao to ask for something else. It wasn’t good to keep a good man waiting, so she felt like she had to say something, too. ”…Yes.” Well. That was a nice yes. But it didn’t inform Kai Lu about anything at all. He wouldn’t even know whether he should go get a towel that Sumire asked for then or to wait for Nao to say something other than ‘yes.’ Nao didn’t even realize that Sumire, who was standing next to her, was watching the soldiers train with such intent and interest because she was just there, sitting down and staring at Kai Lu for too long to constitute polite interest. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,10,true] [atrb=style,width:320px,bTable] i carry the strength of souls now gone A towel? Of course! How could he forget?! They had just entered from the rain outside. He gave a nod of his head, before allowing his golden irises to come upon the Princess, as she stared back at him. "Yes." Was the only word she muttered, and Kai Lu simply perceived it as an affirmative to Sumire's request. He smiled. "Excuse me then." He lowered his head, the soldier obviously holding the Imperial Family and their attendants with great regard. It was the family that his own had served for generations, and he would not fail to carry the same loyalty and honor. Taking a step back with the bowed head, he turned around and began to walk away, raising his head after the first step. A clean towel, hmm? He should have a few extra ones, right? He wandered over quickly towards the far corner of the training hall, moving over towards one of the few boxes that lay there. Opening one of them, he glanced within, before displaying a frown. It was filled with naught but moist and dirty towels. A soldier had been slacking on his duties.
No matter. He would deal with that later. For now, he had to tend to the welfare of the Princess. He raised his chin, thinking as to where he could get a clean towel, when he remembered his own equipment. Walking back to the center front of the place, he gazed upon his towel that lay beside his bag, unused and neatly folded. He picked it up in his hands, holding it up in a rather formal manner, before walking back to the pair. And all this while, he was oblivious to the young woman's stare.
Upon reaching the seated Princess, inquiring not as to why Sumire had chosen not to sit herself down, he gave a full upper body bow, stretching both arms out to offer the towel to her. "Here you go, Princess." And as soon as he was relieved of the towel, he would stand back up straight. Giving her another soft smile, he glanced at Lady Sumire, and then at the Princess. "If I may be excused, I have a training session to supervise." And with that, he turned his back towards them once again, walking back to his soldiers, all of which were busy doing their combat drills.
And he had to admit, the presence of the princess was quite a motivating factor to them. Every single one seemed to suddenly be training harder than before, not wanting to prove themselves weak to a member of the Imperial Family. If only they were like this all the time. Training them would be so much easier. Alas, it would be too much for him to request for her to be present in every training session. She had better things to do in her time, than tend to lowly subjects like them.
At that moment, after all, Kai Lu was but an officer, and had only been so for almost two years. A short service for an officer, and there were more prominent ones that had served longer than he did. Despite the story of Kai Lu's Glory, he was still considered low-ranking by many officers. Nonetheless, he received the respect due for his deeds. As dark as it truly was.
He proceeded on, giving his students a hands-on lesson on grapples and throws.

Her one word was hardly anything to indicate what it was that she wanted, but Sumire did not inform her of such. Instead she let her gaze float to Kai to see what it was that he would do. He wandered off to find a towel. Sumire only just managed to catch the laugh that bubbled up. The poor boy, he had no idea that the Princess was pining for him right this very moment. However, she was certain that she would have to nip this in the butt as soon as possible. The way that Nao looked after him, it was so obvious that she was certain only the boy himself did not realize her yearning.
When he returned with the towel, and then wandered back to his training. Sumire shifted and took the towel to help dry the Princess to the best of her ability. Under her breath she teased the young girl. "It appears he was kind enough to give you his own personal towel." Just a bit of teasing, nothing major, but it was obvious that only Sumire would be so cruel to the Princess. This time though, she did chuckle under he breath. Her head shaking. "Why do you like the boy so much? He is a bit oblivious to stuff don't you think?"
Sumire was really just trying to protect the Princess, but this could easily be misconstrude as being mean. Not that Sumire was often mean to anyone. She took a deep breath and stood straight again, gaze on the trainees. "At least he is good at his job." She muttered, it was as clost to a compliment as the boy was going to be recieving from her today. |

To Nao, being able to see Kai Lu was considered a privilege. Her time was usually occupied with lessons, so whenever she had some time she would come by the barracks and observed him from afar. Sometimes if she had gathered enough courage, she could probably approach him for idle chats that usually wouldn’t last for more than seven minutes. That was also if he happened to be training out in the open space, not in one of the training halls. She couldn’t just barge in, she had to ‘stalk’ him in ways that people wouldn’t suspect. In addition, she had preferred that Kai Lu himself not find out about her special concern for him. It was not a proper princessy thing to do.
All the while Nao was just – well – observing the man as he attempted to fetch a towel that Sumire had requested for. Was life always so good? And seriously, how could someone look so perfect? In Nao’s opinion, her brother Qiu Yu was the best looking grown up male she had ever encountered, with Taixun really closely following behind him with his adorable, cheek-pinching inviting looks. This, of course, wasn’t based on just the fact that they were related by blood. They were really lookers in their own ways, but for Nao… Kai Lu was perfect. She had no complaints.
It wasn’t until Sumire proceeded to whisper to her about Kai Lu handing them his own towel that Nao choked on her own saliva. She went into a nervous coughing frenzy, and felt all her blood flowing to her head, squeezing her tear glands that water her eyes. Such was the reaction of a happy maiden, who was confused at how to feel about such an event occurring in less than thirty seconds. Nao had probably surprised Sumire, but the princess couldn’t help it. After she had calmed down a little, she heard Sumire asking, "Why do you like the boy so much? He is a bit oblivious to stuff don't you think?"
“Uhh… Ahem!” Nao cleared throat. She didn’t know how to reply, because she didn’t have an answer to the question. ”Well… Uhh. What’s your favorite food, Sumire?” She finally replied the halfling’s question with another question. ”And why exactly do you like it? The flavor? The looks of the food? If so, what exactly about the flavor that makes you like it?” She kept quiet for a moment, waiting for Sumire to respond to her train of questions.
Nao gently sighed. ”You know, I think we don’t need reasons to like someone. You just do. It’s just like how I like you, I guess?” She shrugged and laughed a little after saying something so embarrassing. ”By the way… How do you know I, uhm. Fancy… Officer Kai Lu, anyway? I don’t remember ever telling you about – Sumire!” At that, Nao furiously blushed again. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,10,true] [atrb=style,width:320px,bTable] i carry the strength of souls now gone There, Kai Lu stood, his arms crossed over his chest as he gazed down on his men, analyzing their movements and efforts. At this rate, they were going to finish rather early. A large number of them had already learned the technique, and it wouldn't be long until they could actually master it to the point it can become a natural movement. Alas, for now, they were beginners, and Kai Lu would have to just stand by and watch them grow. Even he took his time to get where he was in terms of skill. Becoming an officer of the military had been his dream and fate since he was born, so he had been training for it most of his life. The detail and volume of his muscles, his discipline and his skills in the art of war were obvious results of that long and hard training.
And then, at one point, one of the soldiers suddenly approached Kai Lu, bowing in respect to obtain his attention. "Hmm?" He turned his head, glancing upon the man actually two years his senior. Despite the superiority in age, though, Kai Lu was higher ranking. And that often counted more than age in this occupation. "May I spar with you, sir? Just to see where I stand." Kai Lu blinked, before giving a soft grin. Nodding his head, he uncrossed his arms. "Why not?" The soldier would nod his head excitedly, and Kai Lu would clap his hands once to get their attention.
They all knew what was happening, and the soldiers around Kai Lu would move aside, some stopping in their exercises to witness the spar. After all, they may just learn something from the practice. And there Kai Lu was, standing in one half of the circle, while his soldier stood in the other. Giving a nod, he announced the beginning of the fight, and the soldier would come forward, throwing a right cross at Kai Lu. The officer would lean back, easily dodging the attack. Impressive speed, and evident aggression, both of which were vital in a fight. Another punch, and another dodge.
A kick would be thrown, and Kai Lu would place his hand inwards, stepping back at the same time. Placing his hand on the back of the man's outstretched leg, he pushed on it, increasing his turning momentum and turning him on his back, almost causing him to lose his balance. But he was smart enough to use that to his advantage to step back and throw an elbow at Kai Lu's face, only stopped by Kai Lu's wrist as he placed it in the path of his tricep. They really were improving. Instead of capitalizing, however, Kai Lu would step back, not taking advantage of the open back that was given to him.
And as soon as the soldier recovered, Kai Lu threw a cross as obviously as he could, and the soldier put into practice what he had just been taught. A twist and a turn there, and Kai Lu would find himself being hip-thrown down to the ground, landing on his back. Wham.
The princess was giving them quite a lot of motivation, wasn't she?

Her head tilted and she responded, her answer quite dull almost. "I have no favorite food. I eat because it is necessary..." Not really a lie, Su did not go after food for any reason beyond being hungry. Unless of course it was something that smelled really good and there was just no resisting it. Her hand scratched her cheek at the realization that she had no favorite food, and the question probably meant most normal people DID have some sort of favorite.
However, she changed topics again. Su blinked as she asked how she knew, and with a head tilt it was as though Sumire thought the answer should have been very obvious. "I know you. Do you honestly think I do not know that sometimes you visit the barracks? Or that whenever this Officer is around you get flustered?" She shrugged in response. It was obvious, no matter what the Princess thought.
However, it was then that the officer began to fight one of his men. Her gaze followed the fight. Brow raised as he managed to make the fight include moves that they had just learned. He really was a good teacher, but Sumire was not about to acknowledge this fact again. He had already gotten one compliment, two would be pushing it. |

”Aww, Sumire,” Nao replied Sumire’s down-to-earth reply on her question about favorite food and love interest comparison. “That’s probably a bad reference from my side, I’m sorry if I confuse you. But…” Nao stared at the gazelle hafling for a few moments before continuing what she wanted to say to her. “I guess you’ll understand what I mean when you meet your special someone.” Nao spoke in a playful tone, as if teasing her childhood friend for whomever man she would probably come to like in the future.
The princess then sighed at Sumire’s revelation of how easy it was for her to discover Nao’s admiration towards the Xihe military officer Kai Lu Wei. She thought she had hidden it rather well, especially since she was always careful not to have anyone tailing her when she visited the barracks. “I never thought you’ll find out, I was being reeaaalllyy vigilant all the time…” Her shoulders drooped and she looked a little depressed knowing that her efforts were pretty much useless against Sumire’s astute judgment of her actions and schedules and habits. Because she knew her. Too bad Nao didn’t really know Sumire. The Halfling girl always put up walls of defense around her, it was almost like she was trying to protect people from knowing her; or the other way around. Nao wanted to confront her about it so many times, but was always too afraid that this event would change their relationship. ”Hey, Sumire.” She was quiet for a while, thinking whether she should ask her about it or not. “Uh… Well. The rain doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, huh? Ahahah!” She dropped the idea again, and switched her focus from Sumire to the soldiers training.
Nao had no idea what people found interesting about men attacking one another in such a rough and primitive fashion, beating each other one on one until some damage was dealt to the other. But it was a different story if Kai Lu participated in it. All of a sudden the dull matches turned fascinating to her, even though she didn’t know what the heck was actually happening. She just witnessed him moving gracefully in a swift slow motion, and when a soldier threw him off she gasped and grabbed Sumire’s hand before loudly whispering to her friend. ”Is Officer Kai Lu alright?! What just happened?! That thump was so… ‘Thump!’ Oh no, what’s going to happen to him?!” |
