With everything that was laid out for sale in various stands and shops Zoe had figured that it wouldn’t be too difficult to find some food. However, she had been looking for ages and there simply wasn’t anything. Well, that wasn’t completely true. There were a number of stands selling everything from fresh produce to delicious looking sweets. However, they were all just too expensive. What sane person would pay those exorbitant prices simply for food? Despite this, nobody else seemed to be deterred as they went about their business. Zoe strode down the streets, hoping to find something that was priced reasonably, but nothing caught her eye.
The bustling crowds were easily Zoe’s favorite part of King’s Hold. Not that she enjoyed the press of the people that surrounded her, but the denizens of the city were incredibly diverse and most seemed to be caught up in their own affairs. In every other city she had been to, Zoe had stuck out horribly; her white hair and red eyes making it rather easy for a number of people to spot and pursue her. However, here she was in a city controlled by some of the very individuals who had taken an interest in her and yet she could move around without being attacked or someone reporting that her appearance happened to match the description of a wanted person.
Of course, that didn’t mean that she should just wander around as much as she wanted. Although she blended in better in King’s Hold than anywhere else, there were still rumors of her arrival and she would prefer not to catch the attention of anyone who would report her to the guild leaders. Zoe knew that she needed to keep her head down; if her presence became known then it would not only be her that would end up in trouble.
Depression rushed through her and Zoe paused for a moment as she forced it back and fixed a fake smile onto her face. However, she couldn’t help but remember what had happened before when she had dragged others into her mess. It hadn’t ended well to say the least.
Maybe it would be best just to forget about eating for now and just head back. Zoe wriggled out of the crowd and headed down an alley between two buildings; she’d reach her destination sooner if she cut between the busy streets. Her stomach grumbled audibly as she walked, begging her to put some food in it. Zoe tried to ignore it, but her stomach only became more persist ant as if it knew that this was its last chance to be fed. word count -- tags -- notes -- |

Excited by the sounds and the tantalizing scents of each shop stall, Rameli's red scarfed head drifted to and fro as she did her best to push her way through the crowds to keep investigating the next interesting smell from the next. Much of what her eyes were set on looked too expensive for even her small amount of change saved for travel fare but the display and care of the produce simply amazed her young eyes at the sheer quality than the nearly impossible price tag. To think even simple looking melons back home somehow paled in comparison to the ones stacked under a shaded canvas having royal treatment and golden value. In her mind, she wondered if the melons back home would be jealous even to try and grow to be top quality too but that was merely a stir of childish ideals the more her attention kept drifting away at the next latest of intrigues.
As she went to see what other wondrous discoveries the market had to offer, she quickly had to back away from a pair of two children rushing past her. "Wha-woah!" Stumbling backwards into the alleyway, Rameli blinked in stunned confusion by the time her back hit against the building wall to gather what happened. The young girl remained like that for a few minutes, keeping herself pressing to the wall and watching the throng of people continue onward like a living river. Maybe going back in would be too much to try, now that her mind started to slowly wind down from her hyperactive drifting. Slowly sliding away, Remali took her staff and followed down the less crowded trail to see where this route would lead. Not at all was she deterred by the change of scenery but her ears soon picked up an oh so familiar sound.
"Is that? There really is!" Eager in her step as she was back in the Empire, the girl giggled merrily as she ran on to hunt down a stomach in dire need. Luckily, her search did not last long at all when her eyes spotting someone with long white hair ahead of her. "Found you! Just stop right there," Rameli called to the figure's back.

Still, even though it was a bit quieter in the alley than out in the street, it was difficult to tell. One in her situation couldn’t be overly cautious though. Just as she began to turn around, a voice rang out from behind her.
Zoe’s hand shot to her sword, drawing it before she had even completely turned to face her pursuer. She cursed her foolishness once again; clearly she hadn’t blended in nearly as much as she had hoped. Now she probably was going to have to fight her way out, or at least try to get away.
However, she was rather surprised to see that the person who had called out to her was a young woman who didn’t look any older than she was. The girl seemed to be alone as well, unless her companions were moving around the buildings to cut off her escape. That had to be the case; it was rare for any organization to send only a single person after her, especially when she had already evaded pursuit numerous times.
Still, the young woman standing before her certainly seemed different than from the hunters that normally chased after her. To be honest, she seemed a little unthreatening. That was probably a front though, since anyone the guilds sent after her was likely an experienced fighter. There was no doubt in Zoe’s mind that the girl was one of her pursuers since she couldn’t imagine another reason why someone would be searching for her.
Zoe pointed her sword in the girl’s direction, casting a quick glance over her shoulder to check if the other end of the alley was still open. It was, though she couldn’t be sure how much longer it would be until her only escape route was closed off. Perhaps it would be easier not to trust that she could dodge anyone coming around the other side and instead try to break past the girl instead. It would take her longer to get back to where she was staying, but that might be beneficial in the end.
Turning her attention back to the person in front of her she said, “I’m going to keep this short. No, I am not going to surrender, come quietly, or anything of the sort. I’d have thought that you people would have understood that by now. So come on then.” Despite her belligerent words, Zoe was just waiting for the opportunity to flee. As soon as the girl moved to attack her, she planned on slipping past and hopefully blending in with the crowd as soon as she was able to exit the alley. word count -- tags -- notes -- |

Oh good, she turned around! The chef smiled in all hope to have been heard with the mild echoes of the active business crowd in the main street. As she drew closer however, Rameli slowed her rushed pace to a brief hop while sharing her greeting to the hungry stranger. "Hello there! I couldn't help but hear that you, you...." Her eyes stare down the point of the blade directed at her, slowly losing her cheer to just notice the weapon now. Her head slowly tilted upward as her eyes followed the blade to the other girl's hand then straight to a strangely determined look in her eyes. "have a nice blade? Thank you for showing it to me?" Something seems very wrong about this picture. Does this person really not like food? Maybe it was her words that sounded bad. A weak laugh came from her, getting some idea that this was possibly her own fault. Next time, don't shout ambiguous things. Still, why would a person that's hungry say stuff about surrender and coming quietly? That's too weird for Rameli to take in let alone understand the need to shout such things. Rameli isn't a bad person, or so she thought to herself childishly in the third person.
"What do you mean by surrender," Rameli asked in all bewilderment. "So you're not going to surrender your stomach? I just wanna stuff it with food." After she said her statement, the chef took a moment to look past the while haired girl then back over her own shoulder. Spying no scary looking people around that the sword would better be directed act, Rameli looked back at the albino and smiled in hopeful wishes of not being filleted like a fish.

Despite having called her out, the girl didn’t seem like she wanted to fight her at all. Instead she seemed rather shocked that Zoe had drawn her blade in the first place.
When the girl finally made her intentions clear, Zoe only gaped at her for a moment. She just wanted to give her food? Although Zoe had only been on Yumiris for a few weeks, she had thought that she was becoming accustomed to somewhat strange individuals that she had encountered. Still, she had not expected a complete stranger to come running up to her simply to provide her with sustenance. Zoe had to wonder how the girl knew that she was starving. Had it been written that plainly on her face or was there another reason she had been chosen over anyone else wandering around the city streets?
Of course, there was always the chance that this girl was lying through her teeth and biding for time until backup arrived. The best course of action was probably just to walk away. Even if the young woman’s intentions were as she had stated and she took it as an insult, Zoe would at least be safe. However, just as she opened her mouth to insist that she be on her way, Zoe’s stomach growled once again, even louder than before.
Despite the possible danger of the situation, Zoe had to admit that she was ravenous. Perhaps she really was just overthinking this. Her stomach rumbled once more and Zoe made a snap decision. She’d fought against opponents that seemed much more dangerous that the girl in front of her, though she knew appearances could be deceiving. If this was a trap, then she probably would be able to fight her way out of it. Perhaps sometimes it was better to trust and sometimes be a fool than to suspect everyone’s intentions.
Sheathing her sword, Zoe said, “Sorry about that. I thought you might be someone else.” Even if she was going to trust the young woman somewhat, she wasn’t about to go mentioning that she was wanted. “I’m Zoe by the way.” She figured that she owed the girl an introduction at least after drawing a sword on her.
“So, you said you had food?” Zoe asked, grinning sheepishly. “I guess I don’t really mind surrendering my stomach at least.” Besides, free food was free food. word count -- tags -- notes -- |

"Your stomach. Please?" The wonder chef urged more politely this time as if assured her answer would be a yes. There was no doubt in the red scarf girl's mind that her request would be turned down and certainly not from a person with a stomach that loud. With another resounding rumble of starvation, Remali giggled at her sure fire victory. In her mind, she did wonder why she had a sword turned upon her. This isn't the first time but Remali always acted the same way to have a weapon aimed against her innocent intentions. Why is the world so on edge?
Whatever might be going on in the other girl's mind, Rameli knew to keep her composure and wait it out. Last time she went on ahead to try getting her cooking supplies out, the stranger was about to snap like a bull whip and lob off her left arm. She's only a wonder chef in training and losing an arm during her worldly travels would be terrible! On one hand, it would make whole trip much harder along with having to adapt to using a single hand. On the other, Rameli had to admit that it would be pretty cool and awesome to pull anything off with only haivng one arm. Not wanting to get all starry-eyed on that obscure idea, Rameli smiled and smiled even more so once the sword was properly stowed away and to find the girl named Zoe.
"Now to meet you Zoe, I'm Rameli!" The chef cheered and clapped her hands happily to survive another day. Now, what to make in a small alley like this. Her mind set to work on a plan. Turning around, she set up her staff to be propped across a wooden box and something that looked like a low building edge or a window sill of stone, hung some hooks on the staff to hold a cross wire frame for a hot plate skillet. Below her staff in another spare skillet were hot coals to be her portable heat source. Taking from her pouch, she took out a cheap local fruit she got as snack. "Don't mind candied fruit for the time being? Go ahead and try a piece when I wave at you, kay Zoe?"
Before hearing an answer, Rameli had a pearing knife out to peel the skin as a bed on the top skillet to be a bottom for the fruit slices. In neat little arches, Rameli kept much of her attention to her cooking with notes of the fire's heat and the soft fruit texture she had to worry about part way. Checking into her pouch again, Rameli produced a small container of sugar to toss a breif shake over the fruit slices then another simialr shaped one with selectived pinches of salt over the fruit. Her methods were brief and probabily inaccurate but if the results came out alright then that's all that mattered. Making careful pokes with her knife, Remali tilted her head from side to side on testing the firmness now with the sugar and salt desolved into the gold coloring of the pale fruit's skin, the chef promply stabbed a piece and ate it quickly. "Hmm....sweet but a little salty. Salt is good for hot weather, isn't it?" Stabbing into another slice, she turned and held it out for Zoe. "Anyway, what do you think?"

That was certainly strange; Zoe had been expecting to be led to some sort of kitchen or restaurant. But no, it seemed as though her new acquaintance was intent on setting up shop right there in the alley. Still, she was impressed by how prepared Rameli was to start cooking immediately. Zoe didn’t think it was quite normal for someone to carry around coals, but this was Yumiris after all. If she had learned anything during her time in this world, it was that there were some incredibly odd people wandering around.
“I don’t mind candied fruit at all,” she said, though Zoe really had no idea what it would taste like. Well, fruit was generally good and she was rather fond of candy so perhaps the two would go well together. As she watched Rameli work, Zoe couldn’t help but feel a bit useless. Of course, even if she had stepped forward and assisted the other girl in her work it wouldn’t have ended well. Though she had very limited experience when it came to cooking, the few times she had tried had been rather disastrous.
Although several members of the Sibylline Order had attempted to teach her how to cook, claiming that it might be a necessary skill for her mission, all had given up in the end. Of course, that hadn’t been until after she had managed to start a fire that had burned down half the kitchen before it was contained. She had only been trying to toast bread, but the magitechnology had overheated. Thinking back, Zoe wasn’t certain if that had truly been her fault or if she had just been really unlucky. Regardless, she vastly preferred to leave the cooking to those who knew what they were doing.
Realizing that Rameli had finished while she was still lost in thought, Zoe reached out to accept the candied fruit. Without hesitating, she popped it into her mouth and bit down. Rameli was right; the fruit was both sweet and salty, which was perfect for the weather. Well, really it probably would have been tasty at any time.
“’S good,” she said, her mouth full. “Thanks.” However, even as she spoke, Zoe’s stomach let out another growl. Although she didn’t want to complain, the fruit wasn’t exactly filling. Zoe might not be rude enough to ask for more, but her stomach had no such reservations. word count -- tags -- notes -- |

"Course," the chef answered back. Eventually she got up from her squatting position and held the skillet away from the coals to present to Zoe. It wasn't fancy and anything too special to outside the current setting of two youthful gals in a market alleyway but the compliment and Zoe's stomach just kept Rameli smiling to meet such a person. Holding both the peering knife with the handle offered to Zoe and the skillet forward in an offering gesture, Rameli nodded eagerly for her to take more. "Don't be shy. You can eat all the pieces before I start making the next item."
While the skillet still remained temperate, the girl waited till Zoe took her knife to prod at the fruit before resting her back against the tone building's structure. She honestly felt a little bad to use most of her supplies on hand if this Zoe gal is more on the glutton side who magical keeps their waistline in tact but the chef wouldn't dare let that slip out. Already she had a backup idea in mind if it ever came to that if working at the Empire didn't teach her anything about the outside world. If you want to get a little, work for it. Sure she might not get paid but her services to feeding stomachs and drawing in extra customers don't seal the deal, a little disappearing act would have to suffice. Funny how her 'disappearing' act doesn't involve changing her clothes but who has time to go shopping for clothes when your money is mostly for long distance travel?
Speaking of traveling, Rameli slowly cocked her head an inch to one side and then the other. She didn't care much about who Zoe is or beyond the color of her hair being a lovely shade reminiscent of long strikes of clouds. Her clothes however did spark a curious interest, especially what she wore on her head. In a way, it was similar to Rameli's own headscarf except with a larger boarder. "That's a nice scarf you have. Looks a bit like mine in a way. Are you from around Cirith?" She asked before laughing at her harmless question. "Am I wrong? I thought the style reminded me of home a little. I'm from Cirith, if that earlier question didn't give it away. I haven't traveled too far out yet but was it a safe guess?"

Hoping that she wasn’t coming across as too greedy, she began eating swiftly. It would probably have been better to consume the fruit slowly so as to savor the taste, but she was simply too hungry to bother.
For several moments, Zoe tuned out most of her surroundings and simply focused on the food in front of her. It wasn’t until she had nearly finished that she realized that Rameli was looking at her, tipping her head slightly from side to side. She guessed that the other girl likely was wondering about her strange hair and eye colors; Zoe knew that they were almost impossible to miss. Just as she was preparing to claim that she was albino and it was a touchy subject, Rameli surprised her by asking about her scarf.
“Huh?” she asked, halfway to her mouth with another piece of fruit. Zoe tossed it into her mouth, giving herself another couple of seconds to think before she had to answer. “No, I’m not from Cirith,” she said, wondering if the scarf did in fact come from that sleepy little village. Zoe had bought it not long before in a feeble attempt to hide her hair; it had been cheaper than any of the hats that had been on sale. “I passed through there not too long ago though,” she added. “I wasn’t there long, but it seemed like a nice town.” Hopefully Rameli had left her home prior to Zoe’s arrival; she had caused a bit of chaos after crashing in the forest nearby.
Zoe reached for another piece of fruit and found that it was the last one. Well, there was no point leaving just one sitting there. Once she had finished off the fruit she said, “It was really different than any town I’ve been to.” Unfortunately, it had meant that she had stuck out more than she did in any of the larger cities.
Realizing that Rameli was now likely to ask her where she was from, Zoe quickly tried to change the subject. “Did you know a boy named Lucas?” she asked. “I met him in Cirith and we traveled together for a short while.” Cirith had seemed like the kind of place where everyone knew everyone, so they might have a mutual acquaintance.
“That was great by the way,” she said, holding out the cooking supplies in order to return them. Although she wasn’t rude enough to ask, Zoe had to admit that she was looking forward to this next item that the other girl had mentioned. She wondered if it was going to be something a little more substantial, even eating sweets before the main course was a bit backwards. word count -- 466 tags -- Rameli notes – Sorry for being so slow yet again... |

"Only been there that long huh? Heh heh, I guess there isn't a whole lot but I'm glad you liked passing through home. Maybe if we run into each other again there, you could stay at my place if you like. Oh! At least for a meal if you're on the go," Rameli smiled, happy to see that Zoe enjoyed the snack she whipped up and has been through Cirith before. With Cirith being a small town and not prone to large changes but that made it easier to identity when it came to the Empire's main base and King's Hold.
Turning about to shuffle the coals to keep them heated, Rameli stood back up in time to look very curious at Zoe to have a question for her time time. "Lucas?" That name sure rang a bell to her. Not a lot of people in Cirith with a scrappy looking face like his but Rameli did remember two things about him the most; checking out the stores with discounts and him liking spicy food. At least that would be the time she would notice him around their house whenever her parents were working with strong spices. "Ah, that Lucas. Yeah, I kinda know him. Didn't seem like the type of guy to start adventures when I left a few years back. Why'd you two part ways?"
Pondering on the curious thought of Lucas traveling around, she took back with knife and skillet in thanks for Zoe's stomach before sitting down and opening a pouch of rice and adding some water to get them going, the rice crackling and popping under the heat. "I heard if you eat hot things during hot weather, it'll be easier to tolerate the heat." She commented while kneeling this time, shifting the rice about till they were cooked to the right texture. She rested her arm on her knee for support as her free hand searched through her bag for a small egg, cracking it neatly and tossing the shell into the fire along with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Eventually the simple crispy rice and egg grew to having marinated meat that's been soaking in a jar of sauce to ground up tree nuts and thrown in pea pods and bell pepper skins. Setting the knife aside to clean later, by the time Rameli finished cooking, it was like a small mountain of food she managed to pile up in a mound so none of it fell into the fire. "Whew, this is getting hefty." Setting the skillet on the wooden box near by, slipping a wooden spoon in it during the transition away from the coals. However, the girl remained knelt on the ground, having her knife cleaned and repacking the list of bags and small jars taken out from her travel bag. "Go ahead and have at it while I'm cleaning up. Let me know if it needs some extra seasoning to your taste."
