introduction
One of the eldest and most powerful guilds in King's Hold, the Rogue's Guild is, understandably, a feared and respected name. It's reach has only grown farther under the leadership of Guild Master Micah Flynn. They offer a wide range of services (ranging from espionage to counterespionage and quite possibly everything in between) and keep their fingers in many honey jars—mothers in the Hold and elsewhere often threaten their children with stories of naughty children being carried off by rogues. They are willing to do anything, really. . .if you have the gald to pay.
recent history
Formerly led by Miren Vaal, the previous Rogue's Guild was more prone to being behind-the-scenes, and were considered the puppeteers of King;s Hold. However, a few years past, he died of an inexplicable illness, and current Guild Master Micah Flynn quickly took power. Rumors still circulate even today about the mysterious circumstances of Miren's death, and many suspect foul play, meaning poison. It is likely the best known open secret in King's Hold, but as long as his accusers can't gather enough evidence and his confidantes keep their lips sealed, he will continue to reign over the guild.
guild personality
Ruthless, cunning, and more or less bloodthirsty, the Rogue's Guild proudly claims to be the last thing you never see. Under Guild Master Flynn's leadership, the guild has become like a well-oiled machine— while ruled with an iron fist and kept under strict regulations, they are better off, for the most part. Rogues in the higher echelons of the guild tend to be sophisticated individuals (killing is an art, by Micah's definition), and overall the guild has a very suave air to them, though the grunts and errand boys are generally unaccounted for.
appearance/uniform
While all members are issued a standard cloak, it is only necessary to wear it on official, non-undercover missions— such as the occasional diplomatic delegation or letter-bearing, among other things like escorts. Weapons are given as needed, though each individual is expected to care for the tools of their trade on their own.
The cloak itself is practical and rather warm, made from a dark gray material and hooded. The guild seal is emblazoned across the back in an even darker gray, and the cloak is held with a small, heavy obsidian clasp, shaped to appear as a upside down dagger within a circle.
Micah's closest advisers, informally known as The Hand, are generally composed of five men and women who display a very keen intellect and a incredible prowess for battle— and are trusted (at least, to an extent) by Micah.. They wear the same cloak as all the others, but their cloaks, along with Micah's, display the Rouge's Guild seal on the back, instead of the general guild seal. Micah's, in addition, is lined with silver thread.
initiation/joining
Most prospective members are put through two trials as part of an initiation to determine their suitability for the Rogue's Guild. Such a profession is not for the faint or soft of heart, and the trials root out those who would never fit in.
The first trial is a test of battle prowess. Applicants are pitted in one on one matches with one another, fighting until one cannot continue— whether that is loss of consciousness or death. Once it begins, you may not back out, or voluntarily concede defeat. The victors progress on to the next trail.
The second trial is one of subterfuge and stealth. The remaining men and women are all allowed a head start into a large, dark, enclosed area. Then, a number of rogues equal to half the number of people left are let loose into the space with small daggers lined with a numbing, nonlethal poison. They seek out the applicants and when they catch them, give them a small nick which renders them helpless. Those remaining after three minutes are allowed to continue, while those caught are kicked out.
