He was born fifth out of seven sons, although having such a large family was the norm amongst the rather populous Sanct clan. His parents were both merchants affiliated with the guild, though they never expected pushed their children to follow that path. However, out of the eight brothers, Rolf was by far the most mischievous and troublesome of them all. While his family were generally accepting of his roguish behavior, he wasn’t always so fortunate with others in King’s Hold.Things always seemed to go missing around Rolf. From the time he could walk, odds and ends seemed disappear and would reappear later in strange locations. For a while his parents simply could not figure out why everything from sweets to silverware constantly disappeared and would turn up everywhere from behind dressers to the bathroom cupboards. For several years, his parents remained perplexed until one evening when he was four years old and his father caught him trying to stuff his fork into his pocket. After stopping the boy, Rolf’s father searched his pockets and pulled out a variety of objects, most of which Rolf could not even recall picking up. Although his parents asked him multiple times to stop taking things, especially when he didn’t need or even want them, Rolf’s habit persisted. Eventually his parents realized that asking him to stop was worthless and so decided to instead set out a basket where he could return the objects he’d taken so they at least were easier to find. Rolf was always accident prone as well. He’d constantly be running into things on his right side and in general tended to be incredibly clumsy. Until he was six his family just thought he would grow out of it, but one morning he had a nasty fall down a flight of stairs, breaking one of his arms. When his family rushed him to a doctor to get the bone set, his eldest brother made a comment about how Rolf always seemed to be tripping and falling. The physician decided this might warrant a closer look, and upon examining the boy he found that Rolf was severely nearsighted in his right eye. The glasses he was prescribed lasted about a week. Although Rolf’s clumsiness was soon solved, the boy simply became even more adventurous when he realized that he wasn’t going to run into things or trip as easily. Despite his broken arm, Rolf took it upon himself to lead several of his brothers in an attempt to climb down the side of their house. It would have ended much worse had their father not arrived home and had caught Rolf as his grip slipped, but although Rolf’s fall was broken his glasses slipped off and were crushed. His second pair of spectacles lasted a bit longer, but those too fell off his face and were smashed due to his escapades. After his third pair of glasses were destroyed as well, his parents decided that something had to change. However, Rolf refused to wear the goggles that were suggested, so for a time his parents were stuck. One afternoon, one of his older brothers managed to get ahold of a basic pirate’s eyepatch, triggering a sudden pirate phase amongst the Sanct boys. After parading around for hours in makeshift eyepatches, Rolf’s parents realized that something similar might work. Rolf was all for the idea and before long he had a custom made glass eyepatch. Although his parents believed he would grow out of it before long, he proved them wrong and insisted on wearing nothing but the eyepatch all throughout his youth. For his tenth birthday, Rolf’s father took him along on one of his business trips. Although the boy had seen airships flying overhead for years, this was the first time he’d been on one. After only about ten minutes after they had cast off, Rolf realized that this was where he wanted to stay. He felt that if he had his choice then he would never return to the ground. Although the trip lasted about a week, Rolf felt like it was not nearly long enough. Once he returned to King’s Hold, Rolf’s life was centered around his obsession with airships. He began to work for his father and after a few years he was able to scrape together enough funds to purchase a small skiff. As soon as the small vessel was in his possession, Rolf spent almost every free moment sailing. It wasn’t until he was fifteen that something else caught his attention that could rival his obsession with airships. A family from Gladiolus moved in across the street with a daughter close to his age. After he met her, Rolf found himself spending less and less time in the air and more time at home, or at least nearby. Before he realized it, he was spending a great deal of time simply watching her. If she went out, he knew. Chances were that he’d follow her to her destination as well, just to make sure she got there safely of course. He memorized her daily schedule swiftly, and found himself worrying over it if she deviated from it too much. After several months he began sending her various small presents, though Rolf seemed to be oblivious to the fact that she had started to avoid him. Finally he worked up the courage to ask her to go sailing with him, which she sharply refused. He asked her again a week later, then the week after that. Each time she shot him down, but Rolf simply wouldn’t give up. Soon after his sixteenth birthday, Rolf asked her out a fourth time, but her answer was still the same. However, he was soon reminded that he wasn’t the only one with several brothers. The next evening when Rolf was on his way home from a long afternoon of sailing, the girl’s two brothers approached him, claiming they wanted to talk in private. Since they had always been civil in the past, Rolf agreed to accompany them, only to be sucker punched the moment they were alone. Once he realized that this wasn’t going to be a friendly conversation, Rolf set about defending himself and did fairly well until the eldest boy pulled out a knife and tried to put his eye out. Although Rolf tried to move, the blade still came close to taking his left eye. The deep cut eventually left behind a scar, though Rolf tends to make up wildly different stories if asked about it. The fight would have likely turned out much worse, except for three of Rolf’s brothers were not too far away and they recognized his shout when he yelped after nearly losing an eye. Once his brothers arrived his attackers fled when they realized that the fight was no longer in their favor. However, even as they ran one boy called over his shoulder, “Just keep away from our sister, filthy Halfling!” Rolf couldn’t help feeling stunned; growing up in King’s Hold he’d never really been subjected to anything worse than the occasional dirty glare. Rolf’s brothers brought him home and did the best they could to fix him up, but he tried to leave almost immediately. He felt that this must have been done by the girl’s brothers without her knowledge, even if that idea was completely nonsensical. Fortunately his brothers were able to convince him to wait a few days before going to see her. Before he found his chance to go visit her later however, the girl’s entire family moved away. He spent the next several months depressed, until his father managed to secure him a position on a merchant ship through the guild. However, Rolf’s unique habit soon landed him in trouble. The morning of their departure from King’s Hold he was helping load up the cargo and several pricey objects went missing. Rolf hadn’t even realized he’d taken them and he would have put them back once he cleared out his pockets later, but the ship’s captain didn’t seem to believe him when the items were found on his person. Although that morning he had been looking forwards to sailing through the skies, that evening found him locked up in a tiny jail cell. For half a year he was imprisoned, hating every moment of it. When he finally was released, Rolf found that no other ships would hire him now that he had been convicted of theft. For a time it seemed as though his dreams of sailing for a living were dashed. However, that changed when he was recruited by a certain pirate captain in need of a crew. Rolf soon found that his quirks fit right in with this crew, which he soon came to regard as a sort of second family. Only then did he adhere to family tradition and add his hometown and profession to his name in order to become Rolf Tobias Pirate King Sanct. notes - Rolf will often pick up just about anything that will fit in his pockets, regardless of value. - Unless he is on poor terms with someone, he will attempt to return their possessions. In order to facilitate this, he maintains a ‘Lost and Found’ table aboard the ship. - He is an exceptional thief when he puts his mind to it, however since most of his thievery is done absentmindedly he doesn’t always take precautions against getting caught. vyse - skies of arcadia - rolf sanct |
